Dr. Angela Lumpkin to speak during 2027 Willson Lectures at WBU

By Phillip L Hamilton

PLAINVIEW, TX — Dr. Angela Lumpkin has accepted an invitation from Wayland Baptist University’s Willson Lectures Committee to serve as the featured speaker for the 2027 Willson Lecture Series.

The Willson Lectures are scheduled for the week of Feb. 1-5, 2027, on the Plainview campus. Dr. Lumpkin is professor and chair of Texas Tech University’s Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management.

Dr. Lumpkin plans to explore living a values-based life during her chapel presentation, connecting that theme to the lectureship’s emphasis on applied Christianity. Her dinner presentation will draw on her research on leadership.

Program plans include a dinner lecture at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 2, and a chapel presentation Wednesday, Feb. 3. Additional opportunities for conversation with students, faculty, and other participants are being developed. A detailed schedule and attendance information will be announced closer to the event.

Dr. Lumpkin’s research interests include leadership, sport ethics, teaching effectiveness, intercollegiate athletics, and women in sport. At Texas Tech, she teaches courses addressing sport leadership, ethics and morality in sport, and the administration of intercollegiate athletics.

Her honors include Texas Tech’s 2021–2022 Â鶹APP Chancellor’s Council Distinguished Teaching Award and its 2019 President’s Excellence in Teaching Award. She also received the North American Society for Sport Management’s Distinguished Sport Management Educator Award in 2018.

Dr. Lumpkin earned a doctorate in sport history and a master’s degree in sport administration from The Ohio State University, a Master of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina, and a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Arkansas.

The Willson Lecture Series grew from an original gift made in 1950 by Floydada residents James M. and Mavis Willson to support an annual lectureship addressing applied Christianity and Christian home and family life.

Successful businesspersons, dedicated Methodist laypersons, and active community residents, the Willsons established a legacy of bringing distinguished speakers to Wayland to explore the relationship between Christian faith and daily life.
