How Do Nursing Students Prepare for the NCLEX?

Expert insight from Jesse Gutierrez IV

Written by Phillip L Hamilton

Preparing for the NCLEX-RN begins long before graduation. Successful nursing students build strong study habits, practice clinical reasoning, and consistently apply what they learn throughout their nursing education.

According to nursing educator Jesse Gutierrez IV, assistant professor of nursing at Wayland Baptist University, preparation is most effective when students focus on understanding concepts.

Five Ways Nursing Students Can Prepare for the NCLEX

1. Practice NCLEX-Style Questions

Regular exposure to NCLEX-style questions helps students become familiar with the format and learn how to apply nursing knowledge in realistic patient-care situations.

2. Focus on Clinical Judgment

The NCLEX increasingly emphasizes clinical judgment and decision-making. Students should practice analyzing patient scenarios, identifying priorities, and evaluating possible interventions.

3. Review Rationales

Understanding why an answer is correct—or incorrect—can be just as important as answering the question itself. Reviewing rationales helps strengthen critical-thinking skills and reinforce key concepts.

4. Build Consistent Study Habits

Short, regular study sessions throughout nursing school are generally more effective than last-minute cramming before graduation or testing.

5. Take Advantage of Clinical Experiences

Clinical rotations provide opportunities to connect classroom knowledge with real patient care. These experiences help students develop confidence and practical decision-making skills.

"Students who consistently engage with NCLEX-style learning throughout their program are often better prepared when it comes time to take the exam," Gutierrez said.

The Bottom Line

NCLEX success is rarely the result of a single study strategy. Instead, it comes from developing knowledge, clinical judgment, and confidence over time through intentional preparation and practice.
