PLAINVIEW — Excitement is building at Wayland Baptist University as students prepare to arrive on campus for Koinonia, the university’s four-day welcome celebration, Friday through Monday, Aug. 15–18.
“From the first box you carry into the dorm to the last song at the dance, Koinonia is about building friendships and finding your place at Wayland,” said Hannah Cardy, Coordinator of Student Activities. “We want students to start the year knowing they belong here.”
“Koinonia” is a New Testament Greek word meaning fellowship, community, and shared purpose—an idea that Cardy said captures the heart of this annual event. Designed to help new and returning students connect with each other, faculty, and staff, Koinonia blends Wayland traditions with plenty of opportunities for fun.
The celebration kicks off Friday morning with new student move-in, followed by a cookout on the Gates Hall lawn for students, families, faculty, and staff. The afternoon and evening include campus tours, mixers, the high-energy Koinonia Kickoff, Mo’ Madness, and a late-night Chill Hang in the University Center.
Saturday features small-group “K-Sessions,” lunch at Pete’s Place, the spirited Koinonia Kombat competition, food trucks, hangouts, and a movie under the stars.
On Sunday, students are encouraged to worship at local churches before enjoying brunch in “The Caf”. The afternoon includes K-Sessions, as well as opportunities to take part in a volleyball tournament, enjoy a Baptist Student Ministries-hosted dinner, and close the night with skating and karaoke.
Monday’s events keep the energy going with a scavenger hunt, Mini Fun Day at Moody Marsh, Pioneer Traditions, and a closing dance to cap off the weekend.
