Wayland Baptist unveils bold new strategic plan for 2025-2030

PLAINVIEW — Wayland Baptist University President Dr. Donna Hedgepath announces the launch of a bold, new five-year strategic plan for the university — Rise!

Designed to shape the future of the institution through growth, innovation, and expanded impact, the plan is rooted in the theme “Better Together, We Rise!” and inspired by Isaiah 60:1. The plan builds on Wayland’s deep Christian heritage while charting a visionary path forward.

“Rise is more than a strategic plan—it is a shared commitment to our mission, to our students, and to our communities,” said Dr. Hedgepath. “This is a plan to grow thoughtfully and faithfully, remaining true to our values while positioning Wayland for a dynamic future. As Isaiah 60:1 reminds us, ‘Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.’”

The plan, which guides the university through 2030, is organized around four foundational pillars:

Pillar One: Student Success
Wayland will prioritize student retention, graduation rates, and flexible learning pathways—including expanded digital campus options and inspirational student spaces—to help every student succeed.

“We’re committed to walking alongside our students from enrollment to graduation,” said Dr. Hedgepath. “Every student’s journey matters.”

Pillar Two: Broadening Impact
With a growing international student population and expanded online degree offerings, Wayland is increasing its global and regional reach. The plan calls for greater investment in faculty and student research that addresses real-world problems across Texas and beyond, as well as spiritual growth through mentoring.

Pillar Three: Academic Distinction
Wayland will focus on building niche academic programs that lead directly to employment, reinforcing the university’s reputation for preparing job-ready graduates. Additional investments in faculty development and innovation will further strengthen academic quality. With a focus on the arts, there will be a resuscitation of the instrumental music and band programs.

Pillar Four: Engagement and Belonging
From launching an Office of International Education to expanding summer camps, mission programs, and community partnerships, Wayland will strengthen relationships across all campuses and beyond, while expanding the menu of online program opportunities globally.

“Engagement at Wayland means belonging—for students, alumni, and our surrounding communities,” Dr. Hedgepath said.

In support of the strategic vision, the President said Wayland is also developing a comprehensive campus master plan. This will include major facility upgrades and new construction projects that enhance learning environments, elevate student life, and generate momentum for the future. An operational review of the university’s external campuses is also underway to identify the best strategies for long-term sustainability and growth.

“At Wayland, we are better together,” Dr. Hedgepath emphasized. “Through the Rise plan, we will elevate everything we do—academics, student life, spiritual formation, and community engagement. Together, we rise to fulfill our calling and change the world one student at a time.”
